Spring is around the corner! Phew, it feels good to say that after a long, chilly winter. As we start saying goodbye to all those delicious pots of chili and cheese bread, we begin to reconnect with healthy eating. March is National Nutrition Month, and this year’s theme “Celebrate a world of flavor” is one we can get behind.

We mostly look at herbs and spices as flavor enhancers, yet many of them have powerful anti-inflammatory properties, and have been used for centuries as a way of life and healing. To name a few, gingercinnamonblack pepper and turmeric have a long history of fighting inflammation, easing digestion and working as antioxidants. If you’re looking to cut back on carbs and sodium, but do not want to give up tasty and exciting meals, try some Berbere, a wonderful Ethiopian seasoning. Gochugaru will help you achieve that delightful authentic Korean taste, while saffron can be used in a healthy summer Paella. Try our Chinese Five Spice in a meat marinade for a pleasant surprise.
Try mixing nuts and seeds and dried fruit and portioning it in small portions you can throw in your lunch bag. Dried fruit can have a good amount of sugar, but it is also a great source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Moderation will be key in making sure you do not spend your day worrying about each bite.
And while you’re at it, do not forget to hydrate. Teas – hot or iced – are an easy way to keep your liquid intake up. We are enjoying some of our newest healthy additions to our tea line up – Butterfly Pea FlowerTulsi (Holy Basil), and Lemon Ginseng. Don’t forget about good ol’ peppermint or our Ginger Lemon Blend. A cup of it will not only quench your thirst, but you will also be able to reap their wonderful properties.
If you need some inspiration for the start of your healthy journey, come to our store in North Truro and check out all the great books that will help you “Eat to your advantage.”

To quote the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, “Celebrating flavors from cultures around the world is a tasty way to nourish ourselves and appreciate our diversity.” However you decide to celebrate this year’s Nutrition Month, enjoy every bite!
