MATCHA TEA

Matcha is powdered green tea from the Camellia Sinensis tea plant, and it is made by grinding the entire leaf of the plant into a fine powder. As a result, matcha has a higher caffeine content than a cup of regular green tea, along with a more concentrated taste. Depending on the quality of the matcha, the taste can vary from sweet, nutty, vegetal to savory and umami.

It is also said that matcha has several health benefits due to its high L-theanine content. In drinking the whole leaf, you benefit from more antioxidants, which can help reduce stress, improve mental clarity, and balance cholesterol levels.*

Try it as an alternative to your morning coffee or as a latte in the afternoon, when you need a pick-me-up.

To make a cup of matcha:

Warm up your vessel (a wider cup or bowl) with some hot water. Dip your bamboo matcha whisk in the hot water. Discard the water.(This step warms up your cup and softens the bristles of the whisk for better frothing).
Sift ½ tsp to 1 tsp of matcha in your cup (if you have a scale, experiment with weights (1 to 5 grams) or with teaspoon measures – different grades of matcha will taste differently, as such you may want to adjust the quantity of powder).
Pour 8 oz of hot water at 175 F over the powder (do not use boiling water as it will alter the taste of the matcha).
Whisk briskly in a “W” until frothy and well mixed.
Sweeten if desired. Add warm milk or more water to taste.
