SIMMERING POTPOURRI

If you love the smell of winter-scented candles but you are sensitive to artificial fragrances, let us introduce you to simmering potpourri. Simmer potpourri is a natural way to fill your home with different scents, not only at Christmas time but throughout the year as well. It is a blend of aromatic spices and fruit (dried or fresh) and sometimes essential oils simmered in a pot of water to make your home smell cozy and inviting.

Orange peel or slices, cinnamon (sticks or powder), cloves, nutmeg, rosemary sprigs, apples, cranberries, a splash of vanilla extract, etc. can all be used to create your next favorite simmer potpourri blend. What's great about it is that there are no strict rules, and you can create your custom blend based on preferences or on what you have in your cupboard. With Christmas around the corner, chances are, you may already have a few spices and citrus fruits to start your simmer pot. It would also make a great, unique gift!

HOLIDAY SPICE SIMMERING POTPOURRI

Ingredients:

2 cups rosehips whole
1 cup anise star
1 cup cinnamon chips
1 cup cinnamon sticks 1-in
1 cup ginger root slices
1 cup juniper berries
½ cup whole allspice (Jamaica)
½ cup Whole cloves
1 cup orange peel
Oils (start with 4-5 drops added to the pot, adjust as you like)
Cassia or Christmas Splendor or Dickens Christmas

Add a few tablespoons (3-4 tbsp) of your simmering potpourri mix to a boiling pot of water (2 quarts) or a crockpot, reduce heat and simmer. Potpourri can simmer for hours, but make sure to check the water level and add hot water, as needed.
